Tractor Trailer Hit-and-Run Crash on Sawgrass Expressway Leaves Pedestrian in Critical Condition: Authorities

Matthew Danchak, 34, was struck north of Sample Road at about 12:40 p.m., the Florida Highway Patrol said

A pedestrian who had a crash and then attempted to cross the Sawgrass Expressway is in critical condition after he was hit by a tractor trailer that left the scene Friday afternoon, authorities said.

Matthew Danchak, 34, of Tamarac was involved in a crash with another vehicle and brought his car to a stop by the median north of Sample Road, the Florida Highway Patrol said. The other vehicle was on the right shoulder, so Danchak tried to cross the highway, but he was struck by the white tractor trailer at about 12:40 p.m., the agency said.

All traffic was blocked after the crash, which occurred near Exit 14 at Coral Ridge Drive.

It described the hit-and-run vehicle as having right front damage and said it is missing the lower mirror. It was pulling a box trailer and continued east on the Sawgrass Expressway after the crash.

A helicopter took Danchak to Broward Health North, Coral Springs Police said.

The FHP asked anyone who witnessed the crash or has information about the hit-and-run tractor trailer to call it at 954-837-4012 or to call Crime Stoppers.
