Trial Begins For Teen Accused of Murder

Witness: Teen pleaded for his life before being shot

Opening statements began Tuesday in the trial of a Broward teen accused of robbing and then fatally shooting another teenager after a school talent show in 2009.

Janard Orange, 19, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Gregory Smith, 16, outside Boyd H. Anderson High School.

Smith and a group of friends were waiting for rides home from a school show when three gunmen jumped out of a car, authorities said. They then demanded everyone drop to the ground and then took their belongings. Prosecutors say Orange was one of the gunmen.

Cameron Mitchell, Smith’s friend, testified Tuesday that he heard Smith plead for his life and seconds later he heard a shot fired. Mitchell said he tried to help his friend when the gunmen took off, but his cell phone had been stolen so he couldn’t alert authorities.

Orange has pleaded not guilty.
