Tropical Depression 9 Likely to Become Tropical Storm

Tropical Depression Nine remained poorly organized but was likely to become a tropical storm Wednesday as it headed toward Campeche in Mexico, forecasters said.

The system had maximum sustained winds of 35 mph as it remained stationary about 120 miles west-southwest of Campeche early Wednesday, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

A tropical storm warning was in effect for Celestun to Frontera.

The system, which developed into a tropical depression late Tuesday, is expected to strengthen to a tropical storm later Wednesday and it is expected to continue heading east.

An Air Force plane was investigating the system Wednesday morning.

Forecasters believe the system will stay south of South Florida but will likely bring rain to the area.
