Tropical Depression Number 12 Upgraded to Tropical Storm Kate

A late-season tropical depression was upgraded into Tropical Storm Kate as the storm approached the central Bahamas Monday.

Tropical Storm Kate's sustained winds  were near 45 mph with additional strengthening expected over the next two days. The U.S. National Hurricane Center earlier predicted that the depression would become a tropical storm by late Monday morning.

The storm is moving northwest at 15 mph and was about 30 miles east-southeast of Eleuthera.

A tropical storm warning was in effect for the central Bahamas and northwestern Bahamas.

Tropical Storm Kate is expected to stay east of the U.S. and is not expected to impact South Florida.
