Tropical Storm Humberto Could Skirt Bahamas, Become Hurricane Next Week

Tropical Depression Nine has strengthened to Tropical Storm Humberto and could get even bigger while going well offshore of the United States.

According to the National Hurricane Center's 5 p.m. Saturday advisory, Humberto is located 70 miles north of Great Abaco Island and is moving north-northwest at 7 mph with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph.

A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for the northwestern Bahamas, excluding Andros Island. A Tropical Storm Watch on the east coast of Florida has been discontinued.

For the areas of Miami-Dade and Broward, a wet weekend is in the forecast with rain chances around 60 percent through Sunday and both a small craft advisory and high rip current risks along the beaches through Saturday night.

Boaters are asked to stay on guard with winds between 15 knots and 20 knots and waves between four and eight feet.
