Tropical Storm Kate Moving Away From the Bahamas

Tropical Storm Kate is moving quickly away from the Bahamas.

The storm's maximum sustained winds early Tuesday are near 60 mph (95 kph). The U.S. National Hurricane Center says some strengthening is forecast and Kate could become a hurricane by Wednesday.

As of 4 a.m. EST, the storm was centered about 280 miles (450 kilometers) north-northeast of the northwestern Bahamas and is moving north near 17 mph (28 kph).

The storm is not expected to impact South Florida.
