Two Dead After Car Goes Into Lauderdale Lakes Canal

Two men died after their vehicle went into a Lauderdale Lakes canal late Saturday evening.

The Broward Sheriff's Office responded to reports of a car in a canal in the 4000 block of NW 33rd Avenue around 10 p.m. Fariles Jean-Louis, 47, was behind the wheel of a 1997 Ford Ranger pick-up truck with 55-year-old Herold Ductan in the passenger seat when the truck went into the canal.

Witnesses told deputies the men were able to escape the vehicle, but after initially surfacing became submerged in the water. BSO divers recovered the two men from the canal.

Fire rescue officials transported Jean-Louis to Florida Medical Center, while Ductan was transported to Plantation General. Both men were pronounced dead at the hospital.

Authorities recovered the pick-up truck, and are working to determine how it ended up in the water.
