Two Elderly Pedestrians Killed by Car in Deerfield Beach: BSO

A car struck and killed an elderly couple as they were crossing the street Wednesday evening in Deerfield Beach, according to Broward Sheriff's Office.

The two pedestrians were hit at 633 Ocean Boulevard around 7 p.m., officials said.

A street light was out on the road when the couple was struck, according to BSO.

The victims were later identified as 85-year-old Philip Kendall and 80-year-old Francine Freedman. The couple had just moved to South Florida the day before they were killed, BSO officials said.

The 64-year-old driver stayed at the scene, and it was unknown whether he'll face charges.

Authorities and witnesses said the street light could have been a factor in the incident.

"It's possible that the location itself may have played a role in this incident, it is dark, there is no cross street here so it may have been difficult for the driver to see the couple as they crossed the road," BSO spokeswoman Gina Carter said.

"There's a light here but it's not on so it's very dark here and we've complained about that," witness Howard Comstock said.

The BSO is investigating the crash.
