U.S. Postal Service's Miami Service Center Ready for Holidays

The U.S. Postal Service’s Miami International Service Center is a massive operation and there’s only four others like it in the country.

With the holidays here it’s running full steam ahead. From London to the Philippines, Spain and Poland or Malaysia and Singapore the workers there sort to ship packages to just about anywhere.

During the holiday season they’ll sort out roughly one million items.

How it’s done is pretty convenient. It all starts on a giant conveyor belt that’s suspended above the center. It gets pushed down to a clerk who scans it into the system and from there it gets sorted out.

Once the package is in the right sack it gets a flight and then put into a truck headed for the long journey.

The ISC is open 365 days a year, 24/7. In fact, any mail heading from the U.S. to the Caribbean or South America has to go through there.

The Miami ISC center also handles military mail. If you want to send some gifts to a loved one serving our country on time the deadline is in two days, December 10th.

Emma Muniz is a clerk who works in military mail. "It will get there on time. It will," she said.

No doubt it’s a tedious, tiring job sorting package after package and doing scan after scan. But we all know they’re doing an extremely important job there and the workers are ready for the holiday challenge.

"We got extra work to help us through this situation," Mercy Mendez said.
