USDA Approves D-SNAP Benefits For Over 40 Florida Counties

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has approved Disaster SNAP benefits to dozens of Florida counties affected by Hurricane Irma, meaning residents who qualify can receive additional relief.

The Florida counties of Miami-Dade, Monroe, Broward and Palm Beach counties are among the more than 40 counties approved for the benefits, known as D-SNAP, formally the Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, which provides food benefits to people affected by disasters.

The Florida Department of Children and Families said the counties of Pinellas, Bradford, Union, Alachua, Lake, Sumter, and Citrus can begin registration as of Friday.

“We are working around the clock to provide relief to those affected by Hurricane Irma damage,” FDCF Secretary Mike Carroll said in a statement. “We will continue to stand side-by-side with those who need us as they get back on their feet. We encourage those in need of food assistance to pre-register through the website so we can quickly serve those in need.”

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue said households who may not normally be eligible to receive SNAP benefits may qualify for D-SNAP, depending on income.

“Other food assistance is already underway, but D-SNAP will provide the continued support our neighbors in Florida need, as they get back on their feet after this epic storm. We’re with you, Florida – all the way," Perdue said in a statement.
