Uber Suspending Operations in Broward on July 31

Uber is suspending operations in Broward County at the end of the month due to its ongoing battle with the board of county commissioners, company officials said Monday.

Calling Broward "one of the most hostile regulatory environments in the nation," Uber officials said they'll suspend operations beginning July 31.

"It is impossible for Uber to continue providing the high standard of service and affordability the community has come to expect under the burdens of these unnecessary regulatory barriers," the company said in a statement. "Rather than provide substandard service, we have decided to suspend operations while we seek a path forward."

Uber will still operate in Miami-Dade and Palm Beach. The company said riders will still be able to get dropped off in Broward.

"Uber's claims are ridiculous and they're misrepresenting their claims to the public," Broward commissioner Mark Bogen said Monday. "The county commission cares about safety of residents, we want to know about backgrounds of drivers, just like any business, just like in any city."

In April, Broward commissioners passed an ordinance that requires vehicle inspections, background checks that include fingerprinting and 24/7 insurance that complies with state law for drivers of ride sharing services like Uber and Lyft.

Last month, commissioners set fines for unregistered drivers that could cost as much as $1,000.

Uber has started a petition to change the Broward ordinance. You can check it out here.
