    Former University of Miami football player JoJo Nicolas has died, a day after he was critically injured in Tuesday's violent wreck on the MacArthur Causeway, one of his brothers said Wednesday night.

    The University of Miami is mourning the loss of one of its former football players.

    Former Hurricanes defensive back Jojo Nicolas died Wednesday after getting into a car crash early Tuesday on a Miami Beach highway.

    Nicolas played for the Hurricanes from 2007 to 2011, when he graduated. He signed as an undrafted free agent with the New York Giants in 2012.

    Former University of Miami football star JoJo Nicolas was critically injured in a violent crash on the MacArthur Causeway Tuesday morning. Twitter users have been tweeting their support for Nicolas. NBC 6's Ari Odzer reports.

    In a statement, Miami Athletic Director Blake James said Nicolas "will forever be a part of the U."

    Football coach Al Golden said that everyone who knew, coached and played alongside Nicolas will forever carry his memory.

    Former University of Miami football star JoJo Nicolas was critically injured in a violent crash on the MacArthur Causeway Tuesday morning, Miami Beach Police said.

    Police say Nicolas was heading away from South Beach when his car rear-ended a tractor-trailer. Nicolas had been celebrating at a club ahead of his March 3 birthday.
