University of Miami Student Dies After Fall From On-Campus Building: Police

A University of Miami student has died after falling several stories from an on-campus building while trying to jump from one ledge to another early Wednesday, police said.

Estefano Aime, a senior at UM who was majoring in Entrepreneurship, appears to have fallen in what the school describes as an "apparent accident." The Miami native also worked on-campus at the Rathskeller student center.

The school's Emergency Notification Network Tweeted just after midnight that officials were responding to a "medical emergency" near the School of Communications building, and that there was no threat to the campus.

Aime was rushed to Ryder Trauma Center after falling from the School of Communications building, but later died.

Miami-Dade Police are now handling the case. They say Aime had been dropped off at the school by a shuttle after attending a school event at Rubi's Lounge in Brickell.

He and a female friend went to the fifth floor of the building where he tried to jump from one ledge to another but didn't make it, police said.

Aime had asked the girl if she wanted to jump and she said no, police said.

The University of Miami issued the following statement:

"The entire University of Miami community is in mourning following an apparent accident on the Coral Gables campus, after which a student passed away. Miamian Estefano Aime was a senior in the School of Business majoring in Entrepreneurship, who worked on campus at the Ratskeller. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends."

Police said it's unknown if drugs or alcohol were involved but an autopsy was being performed. The manager of Rubi's said alcohol was served to those 21 and older.

"We've all been seniors together so you see the same people on campus for four years," student Jessica MacConnie said. "To lose one of them is really upsetting."
