In front of his high school teammates, family and a national audience, one of the best high school basketball recruits in the history of South Florida announced his college selection Thursday.

Vernon Carey Jr., the standout center and five star recruit from University School in Davie, committed to play for the Duke Blue Devils starting in the 2019-2020 season.

Carey, the son of former Miami Hurricanes and Miami Dolphins star offensive lineman Vernon Sr., is ranked as one of the top three prospects in the country by virtually every recruiting service. Vernon Jr. chose the Blue Devils over both North Carolina and Michigan State.

Listed at 6’10” and 260 lbs., Carey scored just over 26 points and collected over 10 rebounds a game last season for the Sharks, who won their first state championship last season with a record of 35-2.

Carey also considered Kentucky and his father’s alma mater before cutting his choices down to his final three.
