Viewing Held for Miramar Football Player

Family and friends to say their last goodbyes to Isaiah Laurencin this weekend

Friends and family of a Miramar High School football player who died after he collapsed at a conditioning session last week will be saying their last goodbyes to the teen this weekend.

The viewing for Isaiah Laurencin will take place Friday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Wright and Young Funeral Home at 15332 Northwest 7th Avenue in Miami.

The funeral for Laurencin will take place Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Cornerstone Christian Center Church in Hollywood.

Laurencin, a 16-year-old senior offensive lineman, collapsed the evening of July 26 and was pronounced dead the following morning at Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital in Hollywood, officials said.

He was going to celebrate his 17th birthday on Aug. 10.

Broward Schools spokeswoman Nadine Drew said Laurencin had attended the session but sat out some drills after he indicated he wasn't feeling well.

The 6-foot-3, nearly 300-pound athlete was sidelined for most of the session and wasn't working out when he collapsed around 5 p.m., Drew said.

The cause of Laurencin's death is still unknown, and an autopsy could take months, according to the Broward Medical Examiner.

Last Friday, nearly 300 of Laurencin's friends, family and teammates gathered at the school for a vigil in his honor.
