Wake Up Call Crashes Into Family's Living Room

Roofing truck slams into an Oakland Park home early Wednesday

An Oakland Park family got a startling wake-up call Wednesday morning when a pick-up truck crashed through their living room.

Hours after the incident, Frai Guevara still couldn't comprehend the shattered glass and cement across his living room.

"Never thought I'd see something like that," said Guevara after the sound of a pickup truck blasting through his home woke him up around 5:30 a.m. It terrified his wife and two children.

"It sounded like thunder," said Guevara, who said the driver was apparently trying to turn around in front of his home on Northeast 46th Court. At first, he thought the crash was a water heater explosion. He rushed his family out a side door. Nobody was hurt.

Broward County sheriff's deputies say an illegal immigrant from Guatemala was behind the wheel. They turned 32-year-old Marcelino Mendez Ramirez over to Border Patrol.

"I thought it was a dream," said eleven-year-old Frai Junior, who was late for school. His mom usually drops him off, but the truck also banged into the family van. Frai's parents didn't think it would be safe to drive.

The Guevaras are not sure where they'll stay until their home is fixed. They're just thankful they closed their 2-year-old daughter's bedroom door, because they found shards of glass all the way down the hall.
