Last night's episode of HBO's Hard Knocks did not disappoint, giving Dolphins fans an inside look at the trade of cornerback Vontae Davis. Even though the team appears headed for a rebuilding year, the moves made by general manager Jeff Ireland and coach Joe Philbin this preseason have not lacked for drama.
In the scene excerpted below, Ireland calls Davis into his office to break the news. "The rumor is true," Ireland explains. "We traded you to the Indianapolis Colts."
"I want to call my grandmother," Davis responds before Ireland can even finish explaining the move. Looking absolutely shell-shocked, Davis appears as if the rug was completely pulled out from under him.
Davis' grandmother, Adaline Davis, raised him as a child and is still very much a guiding force in his life. "Why don't we do a little business first, okay, before you call Grandma?" Ireland replies.
Another highlight came when Ryan Tannehill revealed that he has no earthly ability to name the teams that comprise any division in the NFL. "I know our division and that's about it," he tells fellow QB Matt Moore in a meeting room.
Moore incredulously asks Tannehill to prove his ignorance of NFL divisions, and prove it he does. "The directions don't make any sense to where the teams actually are," he later tells the Hard Knocks cameras, pointing out that Miami is at "the bottom of the map" yet plays in the AFC East. It could be worse, though. Atlanta used to be in the NFC West.
At least Tannehill is getting better at his secret handshakes, with a little help from WR Edmond Gates:
