Water Main Break Puts Miami Beach Streets Underwater

Water knee-deep in stretch of Alton Road

Some Miami Beach residents were left underwater overnight after a water main break flooded a street early Wednesday.

The busted pipe spewed water into the streets near the 6200 block of Alton Road, seeping into several homes.

In certain spots the standing water was knee-deep. Workers were at the scene early Wednesday trying to pump water out of the area.

Homeowners in the area were stunned to find the volume of water that had made its way into their houses.

"I found out on Facebook that the water main broke...the place is completely flooded," said David Harris, who is in the process of moving in to his new home in the flooded area. " We literally just bought the house a few days ago, so to get a call like this a few days later, it's kind of troubling."

Harris was left sifting through his home to figure out what items could be saved and what had to go.

"There's about four inches of standing water and the water in the street is knee-deep," Harris said. "It's not a good feeling to come over here at one o'clock in the morning and the whole neighborhood is underwater."

Work on the area is expected to continue through Friday, officials said. Drivers should expect delays.
