The Miami Dolphins will miss the playoffs but they can still end 2014 on a good note when they take on the New York Jets on Sunday.
Miami sits at 8-7 with a chance to pick up a ninth win for the first time since 2008. That season also marks the last time that the Dolphins saw the postseason. A victory on Sunday would also mean a sweep over the Jets.
The game is meaningless otherwise for both teams as the Jets have had a dismal season. New York is currently 3-12 and could undergo a myriad of changes. The Jets are expected to dismiss head coach Rex Ryan following the season regardless of Sunday's outcome. They may also make a change at general manager in addition to on-field moves.
Joe Phlbin will be back next season despite another season without a playoff run. Sunday will give him one more look at the current roster. It is likely that Miami will look to make a few moves to improve its on-field personnel this off-season.
Ryan Tannehill has enjoyed the finest season of his career statistically. In 2015, the quarterback will be entering the fourth year of his Miami career in what could be a make or break season. The Dolphins do have an option for a fifth year which they will need to make a decision on this spring.
The Jets would benefit more with a loss than a win in this game in terms of draft position. Quarterback Geno Smith however has his own reasons to have a big day. The Jets could look for a new QB this off-season but a good showing on Sunday by Smith could potentially change that.
The Dolphins and Jets will kick the season finale off at 1:00 p.m.
