A charter school in Weston will be the first school in Broward County to install a new panic button-type security system that administrators say is an added layer of protection against active shooters.
Parents at Imagine Weston got their first look Thursday at the new safety alert system that allows a teacher or student to call for help with a touch of a button.
The wireless device, ASR Threat Alert System, has two-way communication and sends out an alert with the exact location of an emergency, down to the classroom building.
"Anything that could help keep us protected more and more is important and what this system offers is excellent protection, it's above and beyond what we have right now," parent Gabriel Gabarron said.
The system also sends a text alert with details to Imagine Weston's school resource officer.
"To be able to touch a button and have law enforcement come to us immediately, and have it live, is tremendous in our safety and security," principal Kristin Sorokin said.
The details are designed to eliminate confusion when seconds count, a lesson learned from the 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.
