Wilton Manors, Miami Shores Among South Florida Cities Getting High Marks For LGBTQ Equality

A recent survey from the Human Rights Collation shows several Florida cities leading the way nationally when it comes to setting the standard for inclusiveness in the LGBTQ community.

The group’s annual Municipal Equality Index – which grades cities based on everything from anti-discrimination laws in jobs and housing to having openly gay civic leaders – ranked 37 cities across the country as “All-Star Cities” based on the criteria.

Florida had the most cities of any state, with eight being named All-Stars. Wilton Manors, West Palm Beach, Orlando and St. Petersburg all had perfect scores of 100 (when bonus points were added), while Gainesville (98), Tallahassee (92) and Miami Shores (91) also made the list.

Oakland Park and Tampa both finished with scores of 86.

Across South Florida, the numbers were not great for everyone. Fort Lauderdale finished with a score of 80 and Pembroke Pines scored 78 – while Coral Gables (61), Miami (49) and Hialeah (49) finished with failing grades from the group.

Hollywood finished with the lowest score in the area at 43.
