Winn-Dixie Closing Six South Florida Stores After Parent Company Files For Bankruptcy

What to Know

  • 94 stores will be closed in total by Southeastern Grocers, a Jacksonville based company that also owns other supermarket chains.
  • The supermarket started with a single store in what is now Miami’s Little Haiti neighborhood by William Davis in 1925.

Winn-Dixie Supermarkets, founded over 90 years ago in Miami before expanding across the Southeast, will be closing six stores in South Florida as part of its parent company’s latest bankruptcy filing in an effort to save the struggling business.

94 stores will be closed in total by Southeastern Grocers, a Jacksonville based company that also owns supermarket chains such as Harvey’s and BI-LO. The locations in Palm Beach and Broward counties include:

  • 2581 N. Hiatus Road Cooper City
  • 6301 County Line Road, Miramar
  • 7139 W. Broward Blvd., Plantation
  • 277 S. Pompano Parkway, Pompano Beach
  • 7015 N. University Drive, Tamarac
  • 2675 S. Military Trail, West Palm Beach (Fresco y Mas)

Southeastern Grocers announced the decision Thursday as part of a plan to help them stay afloat while competing with rivals like Publix and Wal-Mart. It’s the third time the company has filed for bankruptcy since 2005 and they expect to emerge from it within three months.

The supermarket started with a single store in what is now Miami’s Little Haiti neighborhood by William Davis in 1925 before Davis and his family bought several chains across the state – eventually moving their headquarters to Jacksonville in 1944.
