Woman Beat Elderly Woman With Lawn Rake: Miami-Dade Police

A Miami-Dade woman was arrested after police said she beat an 86-year-old woman with a lawn rake in the elderly woman's home.

Mariela Gonzalez, 34, is charged with burglary with assault or battery in the Sunday incident, according to a Miami-Dade Police arrest report obtained Tuesday.

Gonzalez remained behind bars without bond Tuesday, jail records showed. It was unknown if she has an attorney.

According to the report, Caridad Mompeyers was sitting in a chair inside her home when Gonzalez barged in holding a lawn rake and struck the elderly woman in the forearm.

The blow caused the wooden handle of the rake to break off, and caused a large cut and bruising on Mompeyers' arm, the report said.

Mompeyers got up and ran toward her bedroom, yelling for her son to help. Her son ran out and found his mother heavily bleeding in the hallway, along with Gonzalez, the report said.

The son grabbed Gonzalez's arms and walked her outside, where she fled on foot. She was later arrested.
