Woman Beaten by Craigslist Roommate Wakes Up From Coma: Family

The woman was allegedly attacked on Valentine's Day by a roommate who'd recently moved in

The Miami woman whose family says she was beaten on Valentine's Day by a roommate she found on Craigslist has woken up from her coma, according to a new video.

Family members of Danielle Jones released the video Thursday. It shows the 23-year-old sitting up in her hospital bed, giving a thumbs-up and laughing as her family claps and cheers for her.

Jones had been in a coma since the Feb. 14 attack. Family and friends say Jones was working with a catering company and living in a downtown Miami apartment, when she found a roommate on Craigslist.

Just two weeks after 35-year-old Byron Mitchell moved in, the family said, he attacked Jones on her 23rd birthday.

"My daughter's face is cut up like he was going to take her face off. She has a brain injury and no one knows what the prognosis is," Aimee Nikolove, Jones' mother, said last month.

Mitchell has claimed self defense, telling police Jones came after him with a knife. He was arrested Feb 15 on an attempted murder charge.

His defense attorney wanted to secure evidence from his client's cell phone, saying it contained evidence that could prove Mitchell's innocence.

Mitchell remains behind bars with no bond.

Jones' family established a GoFundMe page that has raised more than $30,000 since Feb. 19.
