Woman Celebrates 107th Birthday by Knitting Hats for Newborns

Mazie Ford, 107, has been knitting the hats since she turned 100.

Mazie Ford celebrated her 107th birthday by paying a visit to Memorial Regional Hospital's maternity ward.

The centenarian has been volunteering at the hospital for almost a decade where by knitting hats for newborns at The Family Birthplace.

Before diving into her birthday cake with family, friends and hospital staff, Ford unpacked a bag full of her colorful hats for the new babies.

"Every time I make one, I smile," Ford said. "I just look at them and I'm so happy."

Ford began knitting hats for the newborns at the hospital when she turned 100 and works at it every day, making a delivery once a month with her handiwork.

Her 85-year-old daughter Johanne said Ford has always given back and it makes her happy.

"I think it's marvelous," Johanne said. "And I also think that it's something that keeps her going as well. It keeps her mind active."
