Police are investigating a hit and run crash Sunday night in northwest Miami-Dade that killed a woman just days before family members say would have been her 78th birthday.

Officers arrived at the scene near Northwest 9th Street and 37th Avenue just after 11 p.m., where 77-year-old Hilda Garcia was walking across the street when she was struck by a car that may have been traveling at a high rate of speed.

Miami Police confirmed the crash, saying the impact was so severe that the victim's limbs were severed.

"Her only son that lives with her that was coming to walk her across the street called me screaming and yelling on the phone 'They killed my mom, they killed my mom'," said Garcia's nephew Tony Bolanos.

Investigators have not released any specifics on the car involved - with family members saying they have been told that it is dark in color and possibly has heavy damage to the front end, but that has not been confirmed.
