A woman suspected of shooting and killing her 8-year-old daughter and stepfather in an apartment complex along Florida’s Treasure Coast has been taken into custody, authorities said.

Alyssa Torres, 29, was taken into custody around 10:30 a.m. Monday, Port St. Lucie Police officials said.

NBC affiliate WPTV-TV said the incident took place around 12:30 a.m. Monday inside the complex in Port St. Lucie, reporting that officers responded after hearing reports of shots being fired and finding two people dead at the location.

Police later identified the stepfather as 54-year-old Felix Rivera. The daughter's name wasn't released.

Torres' mother, 53-year-old Marisol Rivera, was injured in the incident and was taken to a nearby hospital but she wasn't shot and her injuries are not considered life threatening, officials said.

The suspect, Torres, reportedly fled the scene in a silver 2005 Toyota Rav4 and was believed to be armed and dangerous.

Investigators said Torres was taken into custody without incident at a home in Fort Pierce and taken to police headquarters for questioning by detectives. A motive for the shooting was unknown, and police said she appears to have acted alone.

"It doesn't make any sense, we're trying to figure it out ourselves," one family member told WPTV.

Police said Torres admitted to shooting her family members, and will face two murder charges and one charge of aggravated battery with deadly weapon.
