Woman Who Survived Hurricane Maria While Pregnant Gets Diploma From Nova Southeastern

A woman who survived Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico while seven months pregnant was able to graduate from Nova Southeastern University's College of Pharmacy on Friday with her baby in tow.

Krystal Rodriguez said she was worried about going into labor when the hurricane made landfall last year, since no hospitals were available.

"We didn’t think that it was going to be such a huge hurricane," Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez said she was able to keep up with her studies at Nova while she helped others recover from the devastation.

"Every day, every morning, for the baby, we kept going," she said.

With baby Andres joining her, Rodriguez received her diploma, saying it's a tribute to her parents.

"My mom died of cancer and my dad, he died of a heart attack and this is for them," she said.

Rodriguez will be heading back to Puerto Rico next week to do what she loves most, helping others.

"After the hurricane with the baby, for me this is the, I cannot be more proud of myself," Rodriguez said.
