Women Pose as Bank Officials to Fleece Elderly: Broward Sheriff's Office

Authorities are searching for a pair of women who pose as bank fraud investigators to steal debit cards from elderly victims in Broward County.

The Broward Sheriff's Office is investigating at least eight cases dating back to last month but say there may be more.

The scheme begins when one woman calls the victim pretending to be a bank fraud investigator and claims there has been fraudulent activity on the victim's account. The victim is told a bank representative will come to their home to resolve the issue.

The second woman shows up to the victim's home and promises to swap out the bank card, and the suspects immediately use the card to make ATM withdrawals or retail purchases.

One man, 76-year-old David Assaf, of Tamarac, had five credit and debit cards stolen, BSO officials said. Officials released video Friday of the suspects making purchases with the stolen cards.

The suspects, who may have accomplices, are described as black women in their 20s or 30s. One is heavyset and the other has a thin build, and both dress casually in jeans, scrubs or a dress, officials said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
