Women's Soccer Draws Sellout Crowd in SoFla

Thousands turn out to see Wambach and MagicJack in action at FAU

At Florida Atlantic University Wednesday night, thousands of soccer fans cheered for a team they didn't know existed just a couple weeks ago.

The Boca Raton MagicJack, a Women's Professional Soccer team, drew a sellout crowd of 3,286 for their game against Sky Blue FC.

That's more than triple the MagicJack's average attendance and it's all thanks to the U.S. National team's run in the Women's World Cup.

The MagicJack have six players from the U.S. squad, including Abby Wambach and Hope Solo, although Solo missed the game because of an injury. For the other five, this was their first game since returning from Germany.

"Before the World Cup, we didn't even know that they played here," said Mari McMillian, who brought a team of Under 10-year-old girls from South Miami to the game. "Now we found out that a lot of them play for MagicJack, so we made the drive up here today."

Almost all the young girls at the stadium cheered the loudest for Wambach.

"It's great to see them in person," said 9-year-old Julia Sariol, "and I loved it how I touched her hand and she was all sweaty and stuff."

"The momentum that the World Cup has carried into this league has been tremendous," said Wambach, impressed by the fan turnout. "I can't actually believe it.

"I've seen grown men weep the past couple weeks," Wambach added. "A little kid cried yesterday because they were meeting me."

The MagicJack lost the game 2-0, but the crowd didn't seem to mind one bit as they swarmed Wambach for post-game autographs.

Wambach and her teammates are still recovering emotionally after falling just short in the World Cup. But it helps that they're already thinking about how to make up for it, in one year at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

"It's not the World Cup, but it's the highest level of International football," said Megan Rapinoe, a midfielder for Team USA. "We're looking forward to that, to avenge that loss in the final."
