Zoo Miami Set To Re-Open Oct. 14 After Hurricane Irma

After more than a month of being closed due to Hurricane Irma damages, Zoo Miami will be ready to re-open to the public.

The zoo will officially resume normal operating hours on Saturday, Oct. 14, according to a news release. Special promotions will be offered during the “Welcome Back Weekend,” including 50 percent off general admission on the Saturday and Sunday. A free pair of Zoo Miami branded sunglasses will also be available for the first 1,000 visitors on Oct. 14 and 15.

There was no major damage to the zoo’s infrastructure after the storm, although there were several fallen trees, debris and damage to fencing. The zoo closed on Sept. 7 in preparation of Hurricane Irma.

With the exception of birds and fish that died due to stress, animals at the zoo rode out the storm with no trouble.

“We greatly look forward to opening Zoo Miami again. I’m thankful for the staff and volunteers that have worked hard to clean up our Zoo. We are grateful that the damage wasn’t worse and are ecstatic to be opening our gates to welcome our visitors back!” said Carol Kruse, Zoo Miami Director.
