Burned Teen Recalls Attack

Three teens still in a Broward jail

Michael Brewer recalls the moments leading up to when he was set on fire, remembering what one of the teenage suspects told him.

"Nobody is going to hurt you," is what Brewer recalls one teenager said.  "I need somebody to pour something on me and (that) caught me on fire and then I started running and jumped into the pool."

His words come from a taped interview he did with Broward Sheriff's Office investigators on November 23, as he was recuperating at Jackson Memorial Hospital.  It was 41 days after he was set on fire.

Matthew Bent allegedly ordered the attack because of an argument he had with Brewer over money.  Denver Colorado Jarvis is accused of pouring rubbing alcohol on Brewer.  According to investigators, Jesus Mendez flicked the lighter that set Brewer on fire.

Brewer was burned on 70 percent of his body and has gone through intense therapy and multiple surgeries in an effort to becoming a normal teen again.

On the tape Brewer talks about a cold fluid being poured on him as he was walking away - then the fire.

"My skin was hanging," he said. "I get out of the pool, they sit me in the chair, then they put me on a stretcher and strap me and put me in the helicopter."

Mendez is the only suspect with a bond - $250,000.  Bent and Jarvis are being held on no bond.  All three face attempted murder charges.  They will tried as adults.

While they sit behind bars Brewer continues to recuperate with daily visits to the burn center at Jackson Memorial Hospital.
