Classmates Mourn Weston Kids Killed in Crash

Two students die in I-75 crash Sunday

For students at Weston’s Cypress Bay High School, Monday was somber and heavy just a day after two schoolmates died in a crash on Alligator Alley.

"It was just so devastating to see them pass on,” said Cypress student Alicia Jurisic. She knew 18-year-old Sasha Abitante, one of the teens killed in the crash.

Sources tell NBC Miami Abitante was in the back of the truck with Gabriel Fernandez, who was seriously hurt.

The Florida Highway Patrol says the accident happened about 8:30 p.m. Sunday in the eastbound lanes of I-75 about 10 miles east of Naples. According to a report, the pickup driven by 18-year-old Nickolas Wagy entered the median and turned over, ejected several passengers who were not wearing seatbelts.

Abitante and 17-year-old Juan Zambrano, both of Weston, were killed. 18-year-old Dylan Delgado and 18-year-old Brian Corbet, both of Fort Lauderdale, were critically injured.

Cypress Students met with grief counselors on Monday.

"It was really depressing," said Jurisic. "They had a banner to sign the names of the students…people were writing really awesome things how they won't forget them."

The Highway Patrol says the driver was the only one wearing a seatbelt. He received minor injuries and was treated at the scene. They say charges may be filed, pending an investigation.
