Nightmare Commute Across Northeast

Millions of commuters in the Northeast and mid-Atlantic had to make a difficult commute Wednesday morning due to bitterly cold temperatures, high winds and the the effects of heavy snowfall from the day before. In New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C -- where the weather had caused havoc on the Tuesday evening commute -- wind chills had plummeted well below zero. Hundreds of flights were canceled at New York's major airports. Chicago snowfall totaled 38.9 inches, surpassing snowfall totals for the entire winter season last year. The federal government also effectively shut down Tuesday, as the storm dumped snow across the nation's capital and snarled traffic.
