Bodies of Grandmother, Granddaughter Found in Miramar Lake

Miramar Police are investigating after the bodies of a grandmother and her four-year-old granddaughter were discovered floating in a lake late Sunday night.

The discovery was made in a lake in the Silver Shores gated community in the 2200 block of Southwest 164th Avenue in Miramar.

“Someone noticed an object in the water. Several individuals went into the lake and pulled the grandmother out,” said Tania Rues of Miramar Police.

According to police and family members, the grandmother, 59-year-old Laura Fleming, and her granddaughter, 4-year-old Leila Fleming, were reported missing after they had gone to feed the ducks in the lake.

Family members said neither the grandmother nor child could swim. A cousin of Leila’s named Lourdes described her cousin to NBC 6 saying, “She was adorable. She was a little shy, but when you broke her shell, she was an adorable little girl.”

While police continue to investigate, they don’t believe the drowning was the result of any criminal activity.

“At the present time, no foul play is suspected,” said Rues. “We believe this is a tragic accident.”
