Gunman Shoots Into Crowd at Crash Scene, Bullet Strikes Responding Firetruck

Police say shots were fire during an argument following the crash

A gunman is in custody after police say he opened fire at the scene of a car crash on Chicago's South Side, sending a bullet through the windshield of a responding firetruck.

The two-car crash happened just before 2:30 a.m. Thursday in the 7900 block of South Yates, sparking an argument among the accident victims.

A man who was called to the scene by one of the people involved in the crash went to his own vehicle, got a handgun and fired shots into the crowd, police said.

One of the rounds pierced the windshield of a Chicago Fire Department truck causing damage, but no injuries were reported.

The suspect allegedly tried to flee the scene on foot but was chased down by police.

"He turned around and he ran to Subway, ran out of Subway, then he ran in the alley and the police was literally down the street so they came in such a hurry, they came quickly," said witness Lamon Reccord.

The man was taken into custody and a weapon was recovered at the scene, police said. Charges were pending as of Thursday morning.
