Martin Luther King

How MLK's ‘I Have a Dream' Speech Echoes on Social Media Today

Martin Luther King Jr. shared his dream for America five decades ago and his dream reverberates on social media today.

"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character," King said to a crowd of 250,000 from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

The "I Have a Dream" speech was his most prominent and given on Aug. 23, 1963 during the March on Washington. King remains a source of inspiration on social media, as the national holiday bearing his name is celebrated.

Gestures to commemorate King's dream took place over the holiday weekend. Octavius Raglin, 7, delivered his rendition of King's dream speech at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Oratorical Competition at the historic Douglass Theatre in Macon, Ga. on Saturday.

The Memphis Grizzlies tweeted a photo from their visit to the Lorraine Hotel in honor of the Civil Rights icon on Sunday. The NBA team stopped for a team photo at the same spot where King was killed on the Lorraine Hotel balcony in 1968.

As thousands of service projects got underway across the country, Twitter user @Morrcybr shared that she is "pumped" for a day of service with City Year in Baton Rouge, La.
