Markey, Blumenthal Question Airlines Over IT Systems After Delays

Two Democratic U.S. senators have questioned 13 major airlines about their information technology systems in the wake of cancellations and delays.

Sen. Edward Markey, of Massachusetts, and Sen. Richard Blumenthal, of Connecticut, said Tuesday they sent letters to the airlines inquiring about safeguards and backups in place to protect airline IT systems against power outages, cyberattacks and related hazards.

They say the letters were prompted by recent technology issues experienced by Southwest Airlines and Delta Airlines that resulted in thousands of flight cancellations across the country.

The lawmakers say they want more details about outages or disruptions over the past five years and the safeguards in place to prevent the systems from failing.

Among the airlines the senators queried are American Airlines, Delta Airlines, Southwest Airlines, United Airlines and more.
