The cancellation of this month's Miramar Air Show because to the government shutdown may have cost the base as much as $700,000, according to an article in the UT San Diego.

According to the UT, the Pentagon’s decision to cancel the show left Marine Air Corps Station Miramar with at least $600,000 in contract reimbursements.

The popular event was scheduled to take place Friday, Oct. 4 and Saturday, Oct. 5. However, just one day before the show, commanding officer Col. John Farnam announced he had been forced to cancel the show because of restrictions put into place after the shutdown.

At a news conference Oct. 3, Farnam said vendors, sponsors and people who bought grandstand tickets would be refunded. He also said any lost funds would be factored into next year’s show.

The Miramar Air Show is the largest military air show in the country. Hundreds of thousands of people attend each year. The event typically lasts three days, but was reduced to two days this year because of budget cuts. This year’s air show was expected to barely break even.
