FILE - Nikolai Gorokhov, a lawyer for the family of the late Russian whistleblower Sergei Magnitsky, speaks on a mobile in the corridor of a Moscow court that refused his complaint about alleged inactivity of the Investigative Committee in the case of Magnitsky's death in jail, in Moscow, Russia, May 24, 2017.

Eight people who have been involved in investigating a $230 million Russian corruption scandal have died in mysterious or violent circumstances.

Russian attorney Nikolai Gorokhov survived a four-story fall from a balcony in March, and he told NBC News that he fears he was targeted because he found key evidence in the case involving high-ranking state officials.

“I am still afraid for my life,” Gorokhov said. “But of course I am more afraid about the safety of my family.”

The lawyer says he remembers nothing about the incident, which left him with a fractured skull and sent him to intensive care, but now fears he may have been the latest target in a chain of killings surrounding the fraud probe.
