Businessman Donates $20K to Replace “Scary Lucy” Statue in Western New York

A Massachusetts businessman has donated $20,000 to replace an infamous statue of comedian Lucille Ball that's located in her western New York hometown.

The Post-Journal of Jamestown reports officials in the village of Celoron announced this week that Ernie Boch Jr. of Norwood, near Boston, had donated the funds to purchase a new statue.

Boch, president and CEO of Subaru of New England, said he made the donation because he loved Lucille Ball and is a big fan of her 1950s television show, "I Love Lucy."

The life-size bronze in Lucille Ball Memorial Park drew international attention last month, nearly two years after a  replacement campaign was launched on Facebook with the name, "We Love Lucy! Get Rid of this Statue." The statue, which bears little resemblance to the star, has been dubbed "Scary Lucy."

The village board has agreed to give the statue to the National Comedy Center in neighboring Jamestown.
