Student Spared in Oregon Shooting Shares Story of Attack

A student whose life was spared during the mass shooting last week at an Oregon community college shared the harrowing details of the attack in a statement released on Friday.

Mathew Downing, 18, says that the gunman inexplicably chose him to bear witness and then deliver a flashdrive to police.

"He looked directly at me and said hey kid with the glasses you are the lucky one, I will not shoot you if you give this to the cops," Downing said in the statement.

He went on to describe the attack that left nine of his classmates at Umpqua Community College dead and an additional nine wounded. The Oct. 1 mass shooting ended when gunman Christopher Harper-Mercer, 26, killed himself after he was wounded by police.
