93-Year-Old Apopka Mayor John Land Wants Another Term

Voters in the Orlando suburb of Apopka are deciding whether to return their 93-year-old mayor to office

Voters in the Orlando suburb of Apopka are deciding whether to return their 93-year-old mayor to office.

If Mayor John Land wins Tuesday's runoff election, he will extend his tenure as one of the longest-serving fulltime mayors in the nation. He has been in office since 1949, except for three years.

His challenger is Apopka commissioner Joel Kilsheimer, a former newspaper reporter and a self-employed media consultant.

The runoff election was called since neither Land nor Kilsheimer got a majority of the nearly 5,000 votes cast during last March's mayoral election in what was a four-candidate race. Kilsheimer and Land were the two top vote-getters.

Land had run unopposed in the last dozen years.

Apopka has a population of 44,000 residents.
