Coalition Wants State Supreme Court to Hear Redistricting Case

A coalition challenging Florida's congressional districts wants the state Supreme Court to hear their case.

The groups, which include the League of Women Voters of Florida, asked an appeals court on Tuesday to send the case immediately up to the state's highest court.

A Florida judge approved a new congressional map in August. The new map alters seven of the state's existing 27 districts, but the changes will not take effect this year.

Voters in 2010 passed an amendment that says legislators cannot draw up districts to favor incumbents or a political party. A circuit judge in July ruled that two districts were invalid so legislators changed them.

Coalition lawyers want the state Supreme Court to hear the case so a decision is made before the 2016 elections.
