With just weeks before the election and Republican candidate Marco Rubio already finalizing plans to make it rain at his victory party, some had rumored out loud that the Democrats might consider dropping out of the race to give independent Charlie Crist a fighting chance at the U.S. Senate seat.
Not gonna happen.
Democrat candidate Kendrick Meek made it crystal clear that he is going nowhere, both in the polls and as far as leaving the Senate race is concerned.
"I'm not going anywhere except the United States Senate," Meek released in a statement today. "Because if they want to go back to the Bush years, they're going to have to go through this six foot three inch former state trooper."
We have no question that Meek would likely whip Crist and Rubio in a fight at the same time with one hand tied behind his back, but he is currently getting walloped in the polls.
The most recent poll has Rubio with a commanding 15 point lead over Crist, with Meek pulling up the rear. If things remain the same, and that should be the case unless Rubio decides to go on another extravagant shopping spree with his American Express card before the election, the Republicans will have Florida's seat.
The Wall Street Journal suggested Meek was considering dropping out for the greater good of the party, paving the way for Crist to go mano-a-mano with Rubio. That would be the Dems best chance of blocking the Republicans.
And while it isn't a lock that Crist would caucus with the boys in blue, such a drastic move by Meek would have likely been negotiated behind closed doors.
But such fantasy political football is just that, Meek cleared up Friday. He said after reading the WSJ report he "laughed out loud."
Or maybe he was responding to his chances of actually winning.
