New Marlins Logo Leaked on Internet

Cries of "That's it?" erupt through the Internet after new Marlins logo is leaked

Moving in to their new stadium in Little Havana next year, the Florida Marlins have promised to change their name to the Miami Marlins and unveil completely new uniforms before the start of the 2012 season.

On Tuesday afternoon, this logo popped up on a sports uniform message board (yes people, there are sports uniform message boards, you can find almost anything on the Internet). It quickly spread on Twitter and Facebook after a Marlins blogger spotted it.

The Sun Sentinel asked Marlins President David Samson to comment on the logo, and he replied, "The official unveiling is 11/11, and until then we will have no comment."

However, ESPN has confirmed that the logo is indeed legit.

Regardless of the logo's authenticity, it seems fans are not so fond of the vaguely art-deco design. A poll conducted by CNBC's Darren Rovell found that 38% of respondents find the logo "bad," while 50.4% think it's "horrendous." Only 1% called the logo "great."

The poll was conducted on the Internet, giving it roughly the same level of authority as the end-times predictions of a homeless preacher, but even so, the hatred of the logo is palpable.

But is it the worst idea ever? Keep in mind the Marlins wore all-teal hats for two full years in the mid-1990s, so it could be worse.

The stylized Marlin may strike some fans as a bit too abstract, but considering owner Jeffrey Loria's love of modern art, it is easy to see why the team would go with a design like this.

The M looks like it would fit in on the marquee of one of the art deco hotels on South Beach, giving the logo a clear connection to South Florida.

There is no redeeming the bizarre yellow accent on the M, but give the Marlins credit for being bold (if this is indeed their actual logo and not an elaborate prank).

Besides, at least the rest of the country is laughing at the Marlins for something other than their attendance woes this time around.
