Dolphins Make Bess NFL's Highest-Paid Slot Receiver

Bess made the Dolphins' active roster as an undrafted, unknown out of the University of Hawaii

Davone Bess signed a two-year contract extension with the Dolphins on Saturday that will make him the highest-paid slot receiver in the NFL.

Exact terms were not disclosed, but Bess' new contract passes even former Dolphin and Pro Bowler Wes Welker's $1.9 million salary with the Patriots.

It's a reward certainly well-deserved, and pretty darn good for a guy who arrived in Davie from the University of Hawaii unknown, undrafted, and unimpressive in stature three years ago.

Bess, 25, has become the franchise's most trusted receiver since he earned his way onto the active roster in 2008, and he's done so laboring under the veteran's minimum of $470,000 as part of his rookie contract. Not too shabby for most people, certainly, but far beneath the league average for a guy just nine receptions from tying Chris Carter's franchise record of catches in his first three years.

With Bess' extension, the Dolphins now have all five of their receivers under contract through 2012.
