Brother of Miami Dolphins' Vontae Davis Charged With Murder

Miami football player's brother charged in murder of tourist in D.C.

The younger brother of Miami Dolphins cornerback Vontae Davis is facing first-degree murder charges in Washington D.C. in the death of a tourist.

Michael Davis, 19, was charged Wednesday in the April 24 murder of Gary Dederichs, of Denver, D.C. Police said. Davis had been arrested on assault charges last month in connection with a series of attacks in the Petworth neighborhood of D.C.

He has been charged with assault with intent to kill in two nonfatal attacks in the area and is a suspect in two others, police said. He is believed to have struck people on the head with a hammer or claw-style weapon, choosing his victims at random, according to police. The other four victims survived.

Davis' public defender, Dana Page, wrote in court documents that she was "unable to determine if Mr. Davis grasps or has a rational understanding of the pending legal proceedings and the ability to effectively assist in his defense." She asked a judge to decide whether Davis understands the proceedings against him and can assist with his defense, and whether hospitalization is required.

Davis is the younger brother of both Vontae, 23, and San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis.

Michael Davis is being held without bond and is due in court Friday for a preliminary hearing and a mental observation hearing.
