Cosart Walks Career-High Eight in Loss

Jarred Cosart ended his 2014 season on a down note when he walked 8 as part of a 4-0 loss

The Miami Marlins dropped the first of two games on Friday in a 2-0 loss to the Washington Nationals.

The Marlins and Nationals will play another game in the evening as part of a day-night doubleheader. This game was originally scheduled for May 27th, however it was postponed due to inclement weather.

Jarred Cosart walked eight batters in his five innings which was a career-high and only one short of a franchise record. That record is held by A.J. Burnett who walked nine as part of a no-hitter in 2001. Cosart allowed three runs on Friday but only two were earned.

Since coming over from the Houston Astros is July, Cosart has been a consistently productive pitcher for Miami. His numbers in Miami are eye-opening and promising going into the 2015 season. Control has been far from a problem for Cosart as he had only walked 14 total in 59 innings as a Marlin going into this start.

The 24-year old who should open next season in one of the top spots in the rotation ends his season with a 13-11 record and a 3.69 E.R.A.

With a short start, the Marlins were forced to go to their bullpen earlier than they hoped especially with another game to follow. Sam Dyson was the first reliever called upon and he gave manager Mike Redmond 1.2 innings of one-run ball. Dyson has had a solid rookie season and is likely to return as a member of the bullpen in 2015.

Dan Jennings rounded out the pitching end of things for Miami with 1.1 scoreless innings to keep his team in the game.

The Marlins only had three total hits in the game as they were thoroughly dominated by Doug Fister. The veteran struck out nine and walked none with Donovan Solano being the only Marlin to get to him. Solano singled twice and then added his first triple of the season in the ninth.

The Marlins will send Andrew Heaney to the mound on Friday evening as they look to split the twin bill with the Nationals.
