Marlins lose 6-5 in walkoff in ninth

The Florida Marlins were in control, leading by four runs going into the bottom of the sixth inning.

Even after the lead was lost, the Marlins were still in position to win after John Buck's solo home run in the top of the ninth. But the sizzling Arizona Diamondbacks overcame a blown save by closer J.J. Putz and walked off their home field with a 6-5 victory on Justin Upton's sinking fly ball that fell fair in right.

"We had control of the game through six innings, then they made adjustments, clutch hits," Marlins manager Edwin Rodriguez said. "You have to tip your hat to them. They are a very good team."

Such words haven't been associated with the Diamondbacks for at least three years, but they fit now. The Diamondbacks were 19-10 in May to take over the lead in the NL West, and started June with a series win over the Marlins.

Willie Bloomquist led off the ninth against Clay Hensley (0-2) with an infield single. Hensley struck out pinch-hitter Sean Burroughs then left with what appeared to be a shoulder injury. Burke Badenhop relieved and Bloomquist hustled to third base on a groundout by Ryan Roberts. After a walk, Upton ended the game with his hit.

"The way he looked," Rodriguez said of Hensley, "it looked like he will be out for a while."

The Diamondbacks trailed 4-0 until the bottom of the sixth, when Roberts hit a two-run homer and Kelly Johnson tripled and scored on a groundout by Upton to make it 4-3.

Arizona tied it at 4 in the seventh after loading the bases with one out. Pinch-hitter Xavier Nady hit a bouncer to third base that the Marlins' Greg Dobbs misplayed, the ball bouncing off his glove for an error that allowed Young to score.

After reliever David Hernandez struck out the side in the top of the eighth, Stephen Drew singled with two outs and took second on an errant pickoff throw from Marlins reliever Edward Mujica. Chris Young doubled to give the Diamondbacks a 5-4 lead.

The Marlins' Mike Stanton was a double short of hitting for the cycle, driving in three runs with a home run and a triple. Stanton hit a two-run homer, his team-high 12th of the season, in the top of the second. He also drove in a run with a two-out triple in the third.

Florida starter Javier Vazquez, who lasted six innings and gave up four runs and six hits, drove in a run with a single in the second.

Daniel Hudson pitched seven innings and gave up four runs and eight hits for the Diamondbacks.

Buck's homer ended Putz's franchise record streak of 16 consecutive saves.

"We have won a lot of those (close) games and felt confident going into it (the ninth)," Buck said.

"Made one bad pitch to Buck and he's got a lot of pop and put a good swing on it," Putz said. "I was able to gather myself and make good pitches to get out of there."
